"Set all things in their own particular place, and know that order is the greatest grace." -- Dryden
Are you on the disorganization merry-go-round? Are you living the vicious cycle of never having enough time to "finally get organized?"
Now is the time to take back your life! A sense of order is very empowering. Organization will dramatically reduce stress by allowing you to regain control of your time, space, and life. Developing personal techniques of organization will invariably enhance your productivity, add time and richness to your day, and ultimately result in a fulfilling and successful life.
To help focus on your own and/or your family's organizational needs, please take a moment to ask yourself some very important and revealing questions.
- Are you receiving negative feedback from friends and family regarding your lack of organization? Have they expressed annoyance because you have not responded to important issues in a timely manner?
- Has a major utility been disconnected because you forgot to pay the bill? Are you at the point where you deliberately do not open mail for days, afraid of what you might find?
- Has your desk become so cluttered that you have no work space left?
- How efficient is your filing system? Could another person retrieve a document from your work area according to your specific directions?
- Do you have plenty of room in your garage for your vehicles, or has your garage become the "black hole", filled with clutter, boxes, sports equipment and gardening tools?
- Do you start your day by experiencing great difficulty in determining what to wear? Do you have clothes that clearly need dry cleaning or mending? Are your season appropriate clothes most accessible to you?
- Have you allocated a specific place in your home for keys, incoming mail, phone messages, shopping lists, a monthly calendar for personal and family activities, and emergency phone numbers?
- Do you often forget important events such as birthdays and anniversaries?
- Have you encountered legal or accounting problems due to losing parking tickets, auto license tabs, etc.?
- Do you have enough quality time for yourself and your family, or does it always seem as if you're too busy?
- Would you describe your life in balance?
- Are there areas of clutter in your life or home that are in such disarray that you honestly do not know where to begin?
As you may realize, depending on your answers to the previous questions, the cost of disorganization is very high in terms of emotional and financial health. However, the great news is that there are numerous benefits to change and we are here to help you get started!
"Have a time and place for everything, and do everything in it's time and place, and you will not only accomplish more, but have far more leisure than those who are always hurrying, as if vainly attempting to overtake time that has been lost." -- Tyron Edwards
Let's start with the closet since this has great bearing on how well your day will begin!
Handy Tips for Attacking that Closet Start from the outside in. Get rid of all of the clutter scattered around the room befor you tackle the inside of your closet.
Take everything out of your closet. You'll be amazed at the clothing you forgot you ever had!
Enlist a friend to help you. A friend can help you part with some of the items you have not used in years...particularly if you choose a realistic cold-hearted friend...one that will look at you and say "toss"!
Discard some of that clothing. If it's too small, dated, faded, torn, unflattering in the first place or unable to be mended, toss it!
Categorize the rest of your clothing. Put skirts on skirt hangers. Place shoes on a shoe rack or shelves for easy access.
