Owners Vic and Mandy Johnson started in woodwork manufacturing in 1986 at Armstrong Homes and Brandrud Furniture respectively. Vic worked in all production phases of Armstrong’s Auburn manufacturing site and Mandy managed operations for Brandrud’s 150 strong workforce. Vic later moved to Brandrud, learned the various sides of their operations, and became production manager. After instituting lean principles to their mill, CNC, and finishing shops, productivity was increased by 25%. Rather than relocate when Brandrud sold to the Herman Miller Company, the Johnsons bought Emerald City Closets in Redmond, moved the business nearer their home in Auburn, and added a line of custom cabinets for medical facilities. Their products employed finishes, construction techniques, and joinery inspired by their experience building commercial furniture. In 2012, to meet increasing demand and capabilities, they moved into a 14,400 sq. foot building, part of Armstrong Homes’ manufacturing site on Auburn Way and taking over the door and millwork part of the Armstrong business. At this time the name was changed to Emerald City Custom Interiors, ECCI.

Today, ECCI builds custom cabinets and closet systems, and finishes millwork and doors for the residential homebuilding market in Western Washington. They also contract work for Flora Healthcare, which builds furniture and cabinetry for medical facilities. The material and manufacturing standards required in medical environments flows into their residential home products. As a result, millwork passes through sanding stages beyond the 180 finish supplied by millwork and door slab suppliers. Cabinet boxes are built to survive a 4 ft. drop test and, in addition to residential industry standard lacquer finishes, ECCI can apply medical grade “conversion varnish” to all its stain grade cabinets, a finish much harder than lacquer and which tolerates the harsh cleaning and sanitation chemistries used in hospitals.

We believe the homeowners buying from the builders we serve want the doors, moldings, and cabinetry in their homes to be as beautiful and durable as their own fine furniture. That level of quality is our standard.
